Ganesh Chaturthi

The origin of the festival lies in the Holy Hindu scriptures which tell the story of Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha (or Ganapati) (the names mean "Lord [isha] or [pati] of Shiva's hosts [gana]") was created by Goddess Parvati, consort of Lord Shiva.

According to the legend, Lord Shiva, the Hindu God of resolution, was away at a war. His wife Parvati, wanted to bathe and having no-one to guard the door to her house, conceived of the idea of creating a son who could guard her. Parvati created Ganesha out of the sandalwood paste that she used for her bath and breathed life into the figure. She then set him to stand guard at her door and instructed him not to let anyone enter.

In the meantime, Lord Shiva returned from the battle but as Ganesha did not know him, stopped Shiva from entering Parvati's chamber. Shiva, enraged by Ganesh’s impudence, drew his trident and cut off Ganesha's head. Parvati emerged to find Ganesha decapitated and flew into a rage. She took on the form of the Goddess Kali and threatened destruction to the three worlds of Heaven, Earth and the subterranean earth.

Parvati was still in a dangerous mood. Seeing her in this mood, the other Gods were afraid and Shiva, in an attempt to pacify Parvati, sent out his ganas, or hordes, to find a child whose mother is facing another direction in negligence, cut off his head and bring it quickly. The first living thing they came across was an elephant. That elephant was facing north (the auspicious direction associated with wisdom). So they brought the head of this elephant and Shiva placed it on the trunk of Parvati's son and breathed life into him. Parvati was overjoyed and embraced her son, the elephant-headed boy whom Shiva named Ganesha, the lord of his ganas. Parvati was still upset so Lord Shiva announced that everyone who worships Ganesha before any other form of God is favoured. So Ganesh is worshipped first in all Hindu occasions and festivals.

Before 1893, Ganesh Chaturthi used to be an important public festival during the Peshwa rule in Maharashtra, but that year, Indian freedom fighter and social reformer Lokmanya Tilak transformed the annual festival into a large, well-organized public event[2].

Tilak recognized the wide appeal of the deity Ganesh as "the god for everybody"[3][4], and popularized Ganesh Chaturthi as a national festival in order "to bridge the gap between Brahmins and 'non-Brahmins' and find a context in which to build a new grassroots unity between them", and generate nationalistic fervor among people in Maharashtra against the British colonial rule[5][6].

Tilak encouraged installation of large public images of Ganesh in pavilions, and also established the practice of submerging in rivers, sea, or other pools of water all public images of the deity on the tenth day after Ganesh Chaturthi[7].

Under Tilak's encouragement, the festival facilitated community participation and involvement in the form of intellectual discourses, poetry recitals, performances of plays, musical concerts, and folk dances. It served as a meeting ground for people of all castes and communities in times when, in order to exercise control over the population, the British Rule discouraged social and political gatherings.

Puja in India
----------------

Two to three months prior to Ganesh Chaturthi, life-like clay models of Lord Ganesha are made for sale by specially skilled artisans. They are beautifully decorated & depict Lord Ganesh in various poses. The size of these statues may vary from 3/4th of an inch to over 25 feet.

Ganesh Chaturthi starts with the installation of these Ganesh statues in colorfully decorated homes and specially erected temporary structures mantapas (pandals) in every locality. The pandals are erected by the people or a specific society or locality or group by collecting monetary contributions. The mantapas are decorated specially for the festival, either by using decorative items like flower garlands, lights, etc or are theme based decorations, which depict religious themes or current events. The statues are worshiped with families and friends.

The priest, usually clad in red silk dhoti and shawl, then invokes life into the statue amidst the chanting of mantras. This ritual is the Pranapratishhtha. After this the ritual called as Shhodashopachara (16 ways of paying tribute) follows. Coconut, jaggery, 21 modakas, 21 durva (trefoil) blades of grass and red flowers are offered. The statue is anointed with red unguent, typically made of Kumkum & Sandalwood paste . Throughout the ceremony, Vedic hymns from the Rig Veda, the Ganapati Atharva Shirsha Upanishad, and the Ganesha stotra from the Narada Purana are chanted.

For 10 days, from Bhadrapad Shudh Chaturthi to the Ananta Chaturdashi, Ganesha is worshipped. On the 11th day, the statue is taken through the streets in a procession accompanied with dancing, singing, and fanfare to be immersed in a river or the sea symbolizing a ritual see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him the misfortunes of his devotees. All join in this final procession shouting "Ganapathi Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukar ya" (O father Ganesha, come again early next year). After the final offering of coconuts, flowers and camphor is made, people carry the statue to the river to immerse it.

Street festivities in Hyderabad during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi.The main sweet dish during the festival is the modak (modagam or modakam in South India). A modak is a dumpling made from rice flour/wheat flour with a stuffing of fresh or dry-grated coconut, jaggery, dry fruits and some other condiments. It is either steam-cooked or fried. Another popular sweet dish is the karanji (karjikaiin Kannada) which is similar to the modak in composition and taste but has a semicircular shape.

Public celebrations of the festival are hugely popular, with local communities (mandalas) vying with each other to put up the biggest statue & the best pandal. The festival is also the time for cultural activities like songs, dramas and orchestra and community activities like free medical checkup, blood donation camps, charity for the poor, etc.

Today, the Ganesh Festival is not only a popular festival - it has become a very critical and important economic activity for Maharashtra. Many artists, industries, and businesses survive on this mega-event. Ganesh Festival also provides a stage for budding artists to present their art to the public. The same holds true for Hyderabad too.

For the year 2007 in the Western Calendar, Ganesha Chaturthi commenced on Saturday, 15 September and its allied festival for Ganesha's mother, Gauri (a form of Parvathi) called Gauri Puja comes on September 13 (the day before)

Independence Day (India)

India's Independence Day is celebrated on August 15 to commemorate its independence from British rule and its birth as a sovereign nation on that day in 1947. The day is a national holiday in India. All over the country, flag-hoisting ceremonies are conducted by the local administration in attendance. The main event takes place in New Delhi, where the Prime Minister hoists the National Flag at the Red Fort and delivers a nationally televised speech from its ramparts. In his speech, he highlights the achievements of his government during the past year, raises important issues and gives a call for further development. The Prime Minister also pays his tribute to leaders of the freedom struggle. A colourful pageant showcasing India’s cultural diversity, symbolic depictions of the country’s advances in science and technology, and a joint display of India’s military capabilities by the armed forces are an essential part of the Independence Day celebrations.

The Republic of India is a country that occupies a greater part of Indian subcontinent. It borders Pakistan and Afghanistan in the northwest, the People's Republic of China, Nepal, and Bhutan in the north, and Bangladesh and Myanmar in the east. India's coastline stretches for over seven thousand kilometres. Its neighbours in the Indian Ocean are the island nations of the Maldives in the southwest, Sri Lanka in the south, and Indonesia in the southeast. India is the second most populous country in the world, with a population of over one billion and is the seventh largest country by geographical area. It is a constitutional republic consisting of twenty eight states and seven union territories. The word India derives from the Old Persian cognate for the Sanskrit word Sindhu, the Indus river. The Constitution of India also recognizes Bhārat listen (help·info) as an official name with equal status.

A centre of important historic trade routes, India is the home to some of the most ancient civilisations. India is the birthplace to four major world religions: Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and Hinduism. It also has the third largest Muslim population in the world after Indonesia and Pakistan. Hinduism is the major religion followed in India . India was a former colony of the British Empire under the British Raj before gaining independence on 15 August 1947. The country has witnessed significant economic and military growth after the liberalization of the Indian economy. India is also well-known for upholding the concept of peace, as was demonstrated by its peaceful method of freedom struggle.

--------Road to independence----------

On 3 June 1947, Viscount Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last British Governor-General of India, announced the partitioning of the British Indian Empire into India and Pakistan, under the provisions of the Indian Independence Act 1947. At the stroke of midnight, on 14 August 1947, India became an independent nation. This was preceded by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's famous speech titled Tryst with Destiny.

At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance..... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again. ”

India was saved from british people on 15th august 1947

--------Celebrations--------

Prime Minister of India hoists the Indian flag on the ramparts of the this historical site, Red Fort, Delhi, On August 15th. 15th August is a national holiday in India. Government Offices are lit up. Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programs take place in all the state capitals. In the cities around the country the national flag is hoisted by politicians in their respective constituencies. In various private organisations the flag hoisting is carried out by a senior official of that organisation. Schools and colleges around the country organise flag hoisting ceremonies and various cultural events within their premises, where younger children in costume do impersonations of their favourite characters of the Independence era. Families and friends get together for lunch or dinner, or for an outing. Housing colonies, cultural centres, clubs and societies hold entertainment programmes and competitions, usually based on the Independence Day theme. Most national and regional television channels screen old and new film classis with patriotic themes on Independence Day.

Janmashtami...

Haathi Ghoda Palkhi,Jai Kanaiyalal ki.....

Janmashtami or Krishnashtami is one of the most popular Hindu festivals and celebrated with great enthusiasm. All across the nation, cities and states don a festive look during the Janmashtami celebration. Significance of Janmashtami relates to the historical background of the birth of Lord Krishna. Kans, the king of Mathura was a very cruel tyrant. His tyranny spared no one, even the sages had to bear the brunt of this.Finally the gods could tolerate no more of it and in a dream Kans was told that his evil reign would be brought to an end by his sister Devaki's son who would kill him.

The cowardly tyrant immediately threw his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudev in prison so that he could kill all the sons born to Devaki. In captivity Devaki bore six sons, each of them were killed by Kans.
On the night of the birth of their seventh child, the prison guards fell into a deep sleep and the doors were unlocked. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Vasudev slipped out of the prison and whisked away the child safely to the neighbouring kingdom which was ruled by king Nand, across the Yamuna river.
At that time the Yamuna was in spate, but when the waters touched the feet of the Baby Sri-Krishna, the waters parted making a channel for Vasudev to pass.

American Flag

When freedom, from her mountain height
Unfurled her standard to the air,
She tore the azure robe of night
And set the stars of glory there.
She mingled with its gorgeous dyes
The milky baldric of the skies,
Then from his mansion in the sun
She called her eagle-bearer down
And gave into his mighty hand
The symbol of her chosen land

The 50 stars represent the 50 states
and the 13 stripes represent the 13 original states.

Red signifies hardiness & valour
White signifies purity and innocence
Blue signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice

Peace

Behold, it comes in might,
The power that is not power,
The light that is in darkness,
The shade in dazzling light.

It is joy that never spoke,
And grief unfelt, profound,
Immortal life unlived,
Eternal death unmourned.

It is not joy nor sorrow,
But that which is between,
It is not noght nor morrow,
But that which joins them in.

It is sweet rest in music;
And pause in sacred art;
The silence between speaking;
Between two fits of passion --
It is the calm of heart.

It is beauty never seen,
And love that stands alone,
It is song that lives un-sung,
And knowledge never known.

It is death between two lives,
And lull between two storms,
The void whence rose creation,
And that where it returns.

To it the tear-drop goes,
To spread the smiling form
It is the Goal of Life,
And Peace -- its only home!

From a letter to Miss MacLeod, 26th December 1900
Composed at Ridgely Manor, New York, 1899.

A Blessing

The Mother's heart, the hero's will,
The softest flowers' sweetest feel;
The charm and force that ever sway
The altar-fire's flaming play;
The strength that leads, in love obeys;
Far-reaching dreams, and patient ways,
Eternal faith in Self, in all,
The light Divine in great, in small;
All these and more than I could see,
Today may "Mother" grant to thee!

My Friend

My Friend when I think of you.
I think of all that we've been through.
All the times we argue and fight,
I know deep inside that it isn't right.
I, then feel bad and alot of pain.
It feels like I've fallen from the sky like the rain.
I love you dear friend with all of my heart.
But now that you're gone I've fallen apart.
I'm getting better as the days go by.
I wish sometimes this was all a big lie.
I pray to you every night.
It's like you're my fire, a burning light.
My dear friend, I miss you alot.
I still wonder why you were put in that spot.
I know you're in a place much better than here.
Watching and helping me with all of my fear.
Our friendship my dear friend,
we will have to the end.
Friends til the end is what we will be.
Someday we'll be together,
together you and me.

Life Is Just Too Short

Life is just too short to take seriously my friend.
If all we are allotted is only three score and ten.
We can but blink our eyes and barely turn around.
Then it is over and we are planted six foot down.
Alas, our time on this Earth seems way to short.
A journey just begins and they they shout" Abort".

Now Adam really had it made, he was set up for life.
Then he screwed things up when he listened to his wife.
Eve did not have a clue to the trouble she would make.
All she ever did was to take a red apple from a snake.
Now the Lord got mad, He was chapped they say.
It was not only the mess, the banana peels and such.
But then they started lying ,well that was just too much.

The Lord took them by the hand, led them to the door.
Told Adam " Hit the road Jack and don't come back no more."
Old Adam on his best day, was not the smartest man in sight.
But at least the Lord God gave him 938 years to get it right.
Down through many generation men have come and gone.
Some have lived over 800 years, just where did we go wrong.

Now you take the tale of Noah, wasn't he quite the man.
He lived 950 years, my is not that a most proper life span.
Noah was only 500 years when he begin to build his boat.
He waited for the rain to come just to see if it would float.
He gathered up his family took them on a nice long ride.
Then he packed the ship with critters and floated on the tide.

Now a cruise like that ain't cheap, so it is kind of funny,
That the Bible never tells just where he got the money.
In 500 years of living you can squirrel a buck away.
Noah gives new meaning to " Saving for a Rainy Day".

Life Is A Uphill Race

I would gladly enter into the race, but I am not sure of the rules.
Let somebody else set the pace, i'll follow behind with the fools.

I would be glad to swim the lake, try to get to the far distant shore.
They keep tying rocks to my legs, and then adding a few rocks more.

I would gladly climb that tall hill, Lord, if that is the way you say.
But there is three more after it Lord, there has got to be a better way.

I can see the valley over there, it looks both snug and warm.
Why can't I go an easier way. just what would be the harm?

I can not seem to find an easy path, one that would more smoother be.
Why is it so wrong to want a way, that has both peace and harmony.

Death

Death is not the end
Death can never be the end.
Death is the road.
Life is the traveller.
The Soul is the Guide
Our mind thinks of death.
Our heart thinks of

The Absolute

No mind, no form, I only exist;
Now ceased all will and thought;
The final end of Nature's dance,
I am it whom I have sought.

A realm of Bliss bare, ultimate;
Beyond both knower and known;
A rest immense I enjoy at last;
I face the One alone.

I have crossed the secret ways of life,
I have become the Goal.
The Truth immutable is revealed;
I am the way, the God-Soul.

My spirit aware of all the heights,
I am mute in the core of the Sun.
I barter nothing with time and deeds;
My cosmic play is done.

Make God & books your best friends.

I have always believed that making God and books your best friends
always helps. Because whenever I feel alone I start reading anything
on which I can lay my hands on. And when I need help I can always rely
on God rather than relying on someone and get disappointed later on. I
don't say that there is nothing like true friendship between humans or
that I don't need friends. But one thing is sure, God and books would
never leave you, friends may !

Rakshabandhan -- The bond of Love & Protection

----------The Meaning of Raksha Bandhan----------
Relationships are the essence of celebration and it holds true for any Indian festival. Each festival brings the family together which calls for a total festive environment. Raksha Bandhan is a celebration of one such relation - the relation of a brother and a sister. The relation is no where so celebrated as in India. Raksha Bandhan is a festival which celebrates the bond of affection between brothers and sisters. It is a day when the siblings pray for each others' well being and wish for each others' happiness and goodwill.

The name 'Raksha Bandhan' suggests 'a bond of protection'. On this auspicious day, brothers make a promise to their sisters to protect them from all harms and troubles and the sisters pray to God to protect their brother from all evil. The festival falls on the Shravan Purnima which comes generally in the month of August. Sisters tie the silk thread called Rakhi on their brother's wrist and pray for their well being and brothers promise to take care of their sisters.

----------The Significance----------
Raksha Bandhan is now considered as a day to celebrate the sacred relation of a brother and a sister. Yet there have been examples in history where in rakhi has just been a raksha or protection. It could be tied by wife, a daughter or mother. The Rishis tied rakhi to the people who came seeking their blessings. The sages tied the sacred thread to themselves to safe guard them from the evil. It is by all means the 'Papa Todak, Punya Pradayak Parva' or the day that bestows boons and end all sins as it is mentioned in the scriptures.

Previously, Rakhi festival encompasses the warmth shared between the siblings but now it goes way beyond it. Some people tie Rakhi to neighbours and close friends signifying a peaceful co-existence of every individual. Rakhi Utsav was first popularized by Rabindranath Tagore to promote the feeling of unity and a commitment to all members of society to protect each other and encourage a harmonious Social life.

In today's scenario, the day has a different perspective. The occasion involves a pledge of life-time practice of moral, cultural and spiritual values. The values and the sentiments attached to the rituals of this festival are worth inculcating by the whole human race, the sentiments of harmony and peaceful coexistence. The festival of Raksha Bandhan assumes all forms of Raksha or protection, of righteousness and destroyer of all sin. The ritual of Rakhi tying has become so important that come what may, brothers and sisters try to visit each other place on this particular day tin order to bring back the oneness of the family, binding the family together in an emotional bond of love.

Somebody will cry when they read this.
Somebody needs you to let them be your friend.
Somebody hears a song that reminds them of you.
Somebody needs you to send them this to them.

A Memo From God

To: YOU
Date: TODAY
Subject: YOURSELF
Reference: LIFE

I am God.

Today I will be handling all of your problems.
Please remember that I do not need your help.

If life happens to deliver a situation to you that you cannot handle, do not attempt to resolve it.
Kindly put it in the SFGTD (something for God to do) box.

It will be addressed in My time, not yours.
Once the matter is placed into the box, do not hold on to it.

If you find yourself stuck in traffic; Don't despair.
There are people in this world for whom driving is an unheard of priviledge.

Should you have a bad day at work;
Think of the man who has been out of work for years.

Should you despair over a relationship gone bad;
Think of the person who has never known what it's like to love and be loved in return.

Should you grieve the passing of another weekend;
Think of the woman in dire straits, working twelve hours a day, seven days a week to feed her children.

Should your car break down, leaving you miles away from assistance;
Think of the paraplegic who would love the opportunity to take that walk.

Should you notice a new grey hair in the mirror;
Think of the cancer patient in chemo who wishes she had hair to examine.

Should you find yourself at a loss and pondering what is life all about, asking what is my purpose?
Be thankful.
There are those who didn't live long enough to get the opportunity.

Should you find yourself the victim of other people's bitterness, ignorance, smallness or insecurities;
Remember, things could be worse.
You could be them!!!!

My Prayer

Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers
But to be fearless in facing them.
Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain
But for the heart to conquer it.
Let me not look for allies in life's battlefield
But to my own strength.
Let me not crave in anxious fear to be saved
But hope for the patience to win my freedom.
Grant me that I may not be a coward,
feeling your mercy in my success alone;
but let me find
The grasp of Your hand in my failure.

--- Rabindranth Tagore

Things Aren't Always What They Seem

Things aren't always what they seem. Sometimes this is exactly what happens when things don't turn out the way we think they should. If you have faith in God, just trust that every outcome is always to your advantage.
You might not realize it until much later.

True Friends

Many people will walk in and out of your life,But only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.

God's Blessings

I asked for Strength . . .
And God gave me Difficulties to make me strong.
I asked for Wisdom . . .
And God gave me Problems to solve.
I asked for Prosperity . . .
And God gave me Brain and Brawn to work.
I asked for Courage . . .
And God gave me Danger to overcome.
I asked for Love . . .
And God gave me Troubled people to help.
I asked for Favors . . .
And God gave me Opportunities.
I received nothing I wanted . . .
I received everything I needed

Be Happy

Go Placidly amid the Noise and Haste
& remember what peace there may be in silence
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly & clearly; and listen to others,
Even the dull & ignorant; for they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
For always there will be greater persons than yourself
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortune of time.
Exercise caution in your own business affairs ;
for the world is full of trickery .
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
& everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity.
& disenchantantment, it is perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the council of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture stregth of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue & loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe; no less than trees
& the stars; you have a right to be here,
and whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
therefore be at peace with God, whatever you concieve Him to be,
& whatever your labours & aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life
keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery & broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be careful.
Strive to be happy.

A Prayer for You

May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are child of God.
Let His presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul freedom to sing, dance and to bask in the sun.
It is there for each and every one of you.

Second-born Children are More Disobedient, Scientists Confirm

One of the latest researches carried out by scientists from the Pennsylvania State University, the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Purdue University shows that second-born children are more likely to be disobedient later in life than their older brothers and sisters.

Researchers discovered that the majority of firstborn children are likely to be traditional while their younger siblings tend to be more independent.

This study and its results were published in the journal Child Development. It once again proves that birth order has a very important role in creating a child's personality. Researchers based their study on profiles of 364 children in the United States aged between 7 and 19 and their parents. The study also focuses on the way boys start off with similar character to girls but during their early teens become less sensitive.

In addition, scientists took saliva samples in order to estimate the levels of testosterone and asked the participants to keep a driary about everything the do outside school.
